I was planning another
exhibit for the Vocano Art Center and Kauai Museum.
In my search, I came across an article written by
biologist Bill Mull about the insects living in the
Puna Rainforest--the happy face spider, two kinds of
butterflies. One is called Kamehameha. A light
went on in my head. Why not paint the rain
forest, the Kilauea Volcano through the eye of a
butterfly, or the caterpillar. I realized there is
a correlation between you and I and the butterfly.
This
series of abstract, representational work, dye on ragboard and paper, is a result of my growth both
artistically and spiritually. I have been doing a
lot of work on myself--soul searching, peeling away
the layers, and it is now safe to look at myself. I
see myself as a caterpillar--changing. Just as a
caterpillar goes through the painful metamorphosis
to emerge as a butterfly, so too has my work, and I
emerged into a new form.
